Sam Roberts is a senior official at the newly formed UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, where he leads a team focusing on international data transfers, specifically the establishment of data bridges. He also leads work exploring alternative transfer tools and mechanisms to reduce friction for businesses moving data between regions. His portfolio also includes working with UK regulators and external departments/agencies to develop consistent cross-cutting approaches to country assessments.
Over a decade-long public sector career Sam has worked in AI, open data, government accountability and data ethics, representing the UK at multiple OECD forums, including the Working Party on Open Government, and Working Party on AI Governance. Sam also chaired the multilateral Digital Nations Data360 group for two successive cycles, presiding over the development of the Data360 declaration and Covid-19 Data Manual.
