FTC highlights concerns over AI’s impact on creative professionals

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a report summarising insights from an October 2023 virtual roundtable on the use and impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in creative fields. The roundtable included music, filmmaking, and software development professionals who expressed benefits and concerns regarding generative AI.

Notable concerns included unauthorised collection and use of past works to train AI models, lack of disclosure by AI developers regarding training data, the appearance of AI-generated content in competitive creative venues, style mimicry leading to knockoffs, and generative AI for fake endorsements. While some companies offer opt-out options for artists, participants argued for an opt-in approach to give creators control.

Although acknowledging that some concerns fall beyond its jurisdiction, the FTC emphasised targeted enforcement within its authority to safeguard fair competition and prevent deceptive practices in the AI industry. The report highlighted the FTC’s commitment to monitoring generative AI developments and using its tools to protect consumers and foster fair competition.
